Our history

Everything began with the love for horticulture.

The german and nature lover Franz Georg Gruber, choose horticulture as his profession in 1966. He worked in some countries of Europe, taking his first steps in the production of orchids, where he would meet valuable people and began his attraction to the world of bromeliads.

Those years of experience allowed him to give life to the dream that had been around in his head for a long time: to know the place of origin of bromeliads, Latin America.

In 1977 he made the trip that changed his life. He came to Colombia to be the Technical Director of an orchid farm located in Fusagasugá, about 60 kilometers away from the capital.

The weather, the warm people, the great diversity of species and love made the decision of whether to stay or leave the city quite easy, when he knew that the company he worked for had to close.

After that with Spanish as a third language, his entrepreneurial spirit, his desire to show the world the exotic beauty of the huge bromeliad family and the unconditional support of his wife Gloria, he decided to gather as many of this plant genus and species as possible to dedicate the time that was necessary for its reproduction, at the same time that they cultivated vegetables to sustain themselves and hope that their life project would finally flourish.

In 1981 Bromelias de Colombia went from being a wish to a reality. Since then, the Gruber family, made up of their sons, granddaughters and collaborators, have been working every day from an early age to bring a little piece of nature, cultivated with care and love, to more and more spaces, not only in Colombia but to several countries around the world.

Our first logo

This logo belonged to the german company Hans Gülz Bromelien. When the founder died, the company decided to award this logo to Franz Gruber as recognition of his passion for bromeliads.

For more than 30 years this logo has given life to what is today Bromelias de Colombia.

Our location

Fusagasugá

Its indigenous name means woman who hides behind the mountain. It is the capital of the Sumapaz province and in the 1920s it was the scene of the “Luxembourg Garden”, a company dedicated to the export of orchids, a fact that baptized it as the garden city of Colombia.

The privileged geographical location in the middle of the central mountain range of the Andes, in addition to its spring weather, its beautiful sunsets and its friendly people made it home to hundreds of species that give life and color to Bromelias de Colombia.
